Congress admitted Minnesota into the Union on May 11, 1858 and Richfield residents held their first town meeting the very same day. Named for the “rich fields” and fertile farmland found in the area, the town began as a flourishing farming community. Residential development started to boom when young soldiers returned home following World War II, looking for small, affordable homes close to jobs in Minneapolis. Richfield drew numerous new residents with its winning combination of hometown flavor, distinctive identity and proximity to a major metropolis. Richfield still retains its small town heart and continues to draw new residents to the area.
The city of Richfield today provides an excellent quality of life and is particularly proud of its plentiful recreational facilities and opportunities. The city offers 24 parks covering more than 460 acres of lush green space, including Veterans and Taft Parks and Richfield Lake. The Veterans Park Picnic Shelter is home to the Richfield Farmers Market and Christmas trees are sold at this site during the holidays. In addition to the many parks, residents enjoy an ice arena, an outdoor pool and waterslide and an exciting community center. The Recreation Services Department offers award-winning programs for youth and adults. Of course, the nearby Twin Cities offer no end of exciting recreational and cultural attractions. There are several public museums, private art galleries, music and arts festivals, professional theatre productions and five professional sports teams. Nearby Bloomington is home to none other than the nation’s largest shopping center - the world-renowned Mall of America. |
